UPP founding father: The Late Gabriel Baccus Matthews

The Executive Committee of the United People's Party has begun

discussions with other political parties for possible merger or alliance. The party mandated its Executive Committee to begin formal political discussions with all political parties in the country and determine which party or group of parties it finds politically prudent to collaborate with during the 2011 General and Presidential Elections. The party reached the decision following a consultative meeting held on October 25, 2010 aimed at strengthening the Executive Committee of the party and extended its mandate for another twelve months.

The Party indicated that Article 13, section (b) of the Party Constitution provides for the Executive Committee to organize such special sitting of the party to report on the status of the party, in the absence of a Party Congress.

According to a release, the Consultative Meeting brought together party leaders from the fifteen political subdivisions of the country along with other eminent party members. Also present at the occasion were representatives of other political parties and the National Elections Commission.

Members of the UPP Executive Committee include, Dr. Marcus S.G. Dahn, National Chairman; Ebenezer Barclay National Vice Chairman, Michael C.G. George, Secretary General, Florence Wayfa Ciapha National Treasurer and Bobbyson Sorboti, Assistant National Vice Chairman/Mobilization.

According to the UPP release, in order to strengthen the management framework of the party during this period while the country is preparing for national elections in 2011, the Consultative Meeting also endorsed the addition of five Advisors to form part of the Management Team. Those appointed include, Edmond Ponpon; Sen. Blamo Nelson; 0. Natty B. Davis; Cllr. F. Musa Dean; Amb. Fred Bass Golokeh and Prof. Edwin Tetteh. UPP said it has extended a special invitation to the leadership and eminent members of the Liberian People's Party (LPP) to hold discussions on issues of common concerns. The meeting is scheduled for November 17, 2010.

Any attempt by the defacto chairman of the UPP Executive Committee Marcus Dahn to form an alliance with reactionary groups like the True Whig Party, Unity Party of Ellen Johnson and the likes will be rejected in the strongest possible term by progressive members of the party in the US.

Mr. Dahn should realized that he doesn't enjoy the support of the entire UPP membership in and out of the country. He should also remembered that this party was founded on progressive principles.

UPP shouldn"t form alliance with party or parties that control our country where 95% of the Liberian people are unemployed.
